JONATHAN MEESE
MISS ATLANTIS

21/09/2007 – 03/02/2008
Opening and Performance: 20/09/2007, 7.30 pm, Large Hall
Curator: Jonathan Meese

From 21 September 2007 to 3 February 2008, the Essl Museum will exhibit >FRÄULEIN ATLANTIS< by Jonathan Meese. The painter, sculptor and excessive performance artist is regarded as a shooting star among young German artists. At the Essl Museum the gently irate art rampager will convert the main hall into an overflowing pressure chamber, in which objects, pictures and sounds will be blended into a bubbling volcanic flow. On display will be works from the Collection – the Essl Museum owns about 40 of the artist’s works and thus has the currently largest private holding of his oeuvre – which are staged against an apocalyptic backdrop of stage sets, canvases and sculptures. The centrepiece in this environment is a gigantic machine, sunk into the rotunda of the museum, its energy being channelled upward in the form of intense sound flows. For this installation the composer Karlheinz Essl jr. is providing a multi-layered sound environment, using Meese’s voice as his matrix. Jonathan Meese, who has recently taken on a growing number of stage assignments, is going to make a Big Show of his exhibition at the Essl Museum too. On 20th September, he will open the show with an extravagant performance. The catalogue for the exhibition has been designed by the artist; its presentation on 10th November will mark the climax of Jonathan Meese’s “orgiastic performance circus”. A more contemplative note will be struck during Advent, when Meese will read Christmas stories together with his mother Brigitte.
