MUSIC

Composer Karlheinz Essl jr. curates two different series of concerts for the Essl Collection: "Music at the Schömer-Haus" and "react_chain". In addition, sound and media installations ("Klangwelten") are accompanying the art exhibitions shown at the museum.

Music at the SCHÖMER-HAUS was launched in 1992, with the eponymous four-story circular office building designed by the Austrian architect Heinz Tesar (1987), serving as the venue. Every year, four concerts are given there. The focus of the program is on New Music, which is performed in all its facets, including cross-overs to other genres. Important Austrian and international ensembles, soloists and conductors take part in this series.

Every year, the Essl Collection commissions an internationally renowned composer to write a piece of music specifically for the Schömer-Haus, which is premiered at the renowned "Wien Modern" Festival.

The react_chain series was conceptualized for the Essl Museum which was opened in 1999. Performances in this series take place once a month. Compared with the already established series, "Music at the SCHÖMER-HAUS", these presentations are more experimental, striving for a more playful way of approaching space and sound. One focus of the series is on "composers/performers" who act as both creators of scores and performing musicians. Improvised concerts, performances, installations and all forms of spontaneous and intuitive ways of creating music as well as cross-overs between various arts disciplines and live-electronic music are part of the program. Unconditional openness towards the responses of the musicians and composers to the space and sound is at the core of the program and creates unique moments for aficionados of New and Experimental Music.

Admission to all concerts is free.
