    pFLUG is another manifestation of the work-in-progress fLOW which was started under ever-changing titles in October 1998. The entire project is carried out in numerous steps and takes place in various location with changing musicians from different fields like New Music, experimental jazz, free improvisation and New Electronic Music.
    pFLUG is another manifestation of the work-in-progress fLOW which was started under ever-changing titles in October 1998. The entire project is carried out in numerous steps and takes place in various location with changing musicians from different fields like New Music, experimental jazz, free improvisation and New Electronic Music.

    The project is based on a sound scape that which fills the space with flooding sounds that resemble - metaphorically - the timbres of water, fire, earth, and air.

    For each performance, the sound scape is interpreted and commented by live-musicians. Each realisation is developed for the specific place and takes into account its individual socio-cultural context. Besides music and sound, a realisation can also include light installations, film projections, performance aspects, elaborated time scores and computer-generated Playing Strategies.

    The unfolding of pFLUG is controlled by a time score which determines the temporal development of the 4 musicians (protagonists from the New Electronic Music scene) over a total time of 200 minutes. All musicians are using the same sound material that has been played and recorded by Karlheinz Essl on his electronic instrument m@ze°2 which they process individually according to their personal musical approach. The entire performance took place at the Rotunda in the new exhibition building of the Essl Collection.

    The projection of live-generated video by Tanja Diezmann / pReview serves as an independent, yet related layer that transfigures the same basic concepts into the visual domain.

Die Fortsetzung des riskanten, aber künstlerisch immer wieder produktiven Akts, das improvisierte Zusammenspiel unter Bewahrung der eigenen Haltung über Szenegrenzen hinweg, ist an mehreren Knotenpunkten schon geplant, beispielsweise im November dieses Jahres, wenn wieder eine neue Quartettformation Premiere feiern wird: "Computer" steht bei allen vieren als Instrumentalbezeichnung, wenn - umgeben von Live-Videoprojektionen von Tanja Diezmann - Karlheinz Essl mit Peter Rehberg, Zeitblom und Christian Fennesz spielt.

    Ein Rundgang durch die Baustelle des Ausstellungshauses der Sammlung Essl mit Karlheinz Essl - Komponist, Laptop-Musiker und Kurator des Musikprogramms in dem neuen Museum.

Wer sich in der vitalen Wiener Improvisationsszene aber etwas auskennt, wird in der Programmvorschau von "react_chain_" einige Bekannte finden, die oft auch bereits zuvor mit Essl gespielt haben. Zum Beispiel gleich bei der Eröffnung des Ausstellungshauses am 4. und 5. November 1999. Für pFLUG, eine weitere Manifestation seines work-in-progress "fLOW", hat sich Essl vier namhafte Kollegen eingeladen: Christian Fennesz und Peter Rehberg, beide vom Wiener Elektronik-Label "mego" und dieses Jahr bei der Ars-Electronica in der Kategorie Digitale Musik ausgezeichnet, werden gemeinsam mit Zeitblom, einem Berliner Laptop-Musiker und Karlheinz Essl selber über dessen Soundscape fLOW improvisieren - optisch begleitet von einer Video-Projektion der Berliner Künstlerin Tanja Diezmann.
